Game Recap – Sporting Kansas City vs. San Jose Earthquakes

August 20th, 2015

Nobody expected last night’s result in this match, certainly not us at MLSGoals.  We wrote very clearly that “not only does Sporting Kansas City have the home advantage, but they have everything else going for them”.

Little did we know that visitors San Jose Earthquakes had other plans in mind…

It started right after kick-off, with Shea Salinas with a beautiful run across the field, to find Cordell Cato who scored the first goal for San Jose (3’).

Then Sporting’s Chance Myers pushed from behind Quakes’ Quincy Amarikwa in the penalty box, conceding a foul and penalty kick that was converted into a goal by San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski (17’).

Amarikwa also assisted Anibal Godoy who scored 10 minutes later (27’), letting the Earthquakes go into halftime with a 3-0 lead.

If it was expected for the hosts to come back from the dressing room and regroup, it didn’t happen.  Sporting Kansas City appeared to be tired and confused, allowing again Cordell Cato to score what appeared to be an easy goal from the center.  Again, assisted by Salinas.

But a 4-0 lead did not appear to be enough for San Jose, whom continued to destroy Kansas City, with Chris Wondolowski scoring an amazing header from the middle afar.

Things went from bad to worse for Sporting Kansas City, with Benny Feilhaber being shown a red card and sent off due to denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, and Krisztian Nemeth shown a yellow card due to unsporting behaviour.

This entire night was a celebration for San Jose Earthquakes, with Wondolowski celebrating his 100th goal.  The Quakes handed Kansas City their first loss in the last 17 home games, and ended a 10-streak road loss to Sporting KC in all competitions.
