Colorado Rapids vs. Houston Dynamo – Game Recap

Last night (Wednesday) seemed to be bring a bit of a change of fortunes to both bottom dwellers of Major League Soccer this season.  Well, if not a change of fortune, at least a slight hope for a playoff position in the post season.

In a similar fashion to Colorado’s win, at Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference, basement dwellers Chicago Fire marked a 3-2 home win against top contender New York Red Bulls last night.

Hosts Colorado Rapids, even after this game still last at the MLS Western Conference, hosted Huston Dynamo, who are also below the red line currently, ranked eighth in the same conference.

Colorado are came to this match on the back of a 1-0 win at Chicago Fire last Saturday, while Houston Dynamo are coming after a 2-2 draw at Portland Timbers last Friday.

Last night was the second meeting between the sides this season, with the previous match being a goalless tie at Houston in March.

Similar to the other game taking place in the East last night around the same times, this night also turn out to be nothing as expected.

Hosts Colorado started strong on attack right form kick off, in turn it took Houston time to find their form, when the Dynamo got into the game and started to create opportunities about 10 minutes into the first half.

The first goal of the night came from a penalty conceded by Dynamo’s defender Alex, who slid inside the box and touched the ball with his hand.

Colorado’s Vicente Sanchez converted the penalty by scoring a goal to the right (20’).

Colorado Rapids 1 – 0 Houston Dynamo

The visitors got their redemption fifteen minutes later, with yet another handball in the box, this time by Colorado’s Bobby Burling.

Dynamo’s Brad Davis then converted the second penalty of the night, with a skilful kick to the upper center of the goal (35’).

Colorado Rapids 1 – 1 Houston Dynamo

Both sides continued to create chances, however the next one to materialize with Sean St. Ledger saving a ball from the edge of Houston’s end line, the pass found Kevin Doyle inside the box, to score a powerful header from close range (80’).

Colorado Rapids 2 – 1 Houston Dynamo

This late goal revived Colorado’s attack, as the team applied impressive pressure on Huston from then on, nearly scoring another goal on the 84th minute.  However no other chances materialized to the whistle.

Both sides will return to play this Saturday within the MLS Western Conference, with Colorado hosting Sporting Kansas City, and Houston hosting the Vancouver Whitecaps.
